Cadex CB18.50 Brad Gun - Review
Anyone who is even the most casual reader of this site it likely to know that we're slobbering idiots when it comes to Cadex's CPB 23.50 23 gauge pinner (our review is here). It has always been our opinion that it's just one of the finest tools we've ever used. That said, we were obviously interested when we discovered that Cadex just released a brad gun called the CB 18.50, and that it is equipped with a lot of the same features that made the 23.50 so successful. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one to try out and try it out we did.
We're going to warn you right off the bat that we loved this tool. If you're into reading about grown men getting all lovey-dovey about a nail gun, then read on. If not, then go back to whatever it is you were doing.
As far as features, the Cadex has the little thumb-operated blow gun that is on the 23.50. If you think it's superfluous, trust us it's not, you'll find yourself using it quite a bit. The quick-release nose cover is easy to use in case of a jammed nail (which we never experienced) and has the simple functionality of something you'd find on a framing gun. The same goes for the single/bounce fire toggle as well as the depth control. The gun can handle 3/4" to 2" brads, so there's a nice wide range of fasteners it can take. Pretty much the only thing missing from the 18.50 is a belt hook which we actually think is a major oversight.
We tested the tool out on a few projects and we can't say a whole lot more than that it operates exactly the way we thought it would. That's to say perfectly. Nice line of sight, great precision and fantastic balance in the hand.
The Cadex costs about $200, which is about double what you can get our old Porter-Cable brad gun for. Does the Porter-Cable work fine? Yeah, sure it does. Is the Cadex head, shoulders, waist, and feet above it? Absolutely. It's the difference between a Ford Tempo and an Audi TT. They'll both get you there, but if you're interested in the ride, there's really only one choice.
